Gorefield Sport & Amenity Centre Fundraising Committee are holding their 1st Annual Scarecrow Competition which has been a huge success with over 35 exhibits in the village and surrounding area.
'The villagers are very enthusiastic with some brilliant ideas added to which there is also a great atmosphere amongst the competitors' said one of the organisers. Judging, which took place last Wednesday, was done by Ex Mayor and Local Councillor Les Sims accompanied by Brenda Mitchell and Jack Bailey. The results are a closely guarded secret until next Saturday, 6th September, when they will be announced at the Annual Flower & Vegetable Show. The Show is held in the Church Hall in Gote Lane when the winners can expect to receive a trophy and a certificate along with a badge to display on the winning Scarecrow. The Committee plan to make this an annual event to coincide with the Flower and Veg Show which is now in its 17th successful year.
Sadly during the week some Scarecrows were wilfully damaged and one was even set on fire but the villagers overcome these problems and replaced their Scarecrows with even greater enthusiasm.
Following are pictures of most of them:-
